the olympic torrent salamander is closely related to torrent salamanders of the eastern north american lineage. the two species are easily distinguished from one another by the presence of a short ear flap.
some of the most striking morphological differences between the two species are the length of the snout and the coloration of the skin in the terrestrial phase. the terrestrial phase of the mountain torrent salamander in the united states is a much darker species than its sister species. this darker coloration is likely to reflect the greater intensity of uv light in the western united states compared to eastern united states. uv light is a major photoreceptor and thus darkening the skin in the terrestrial phase may protect the salamanders from uv-induced oxidative damage. another possible explanation is that this dark coloration is a camouflage against predators. this hypothesis would be consistent with the cryptic nature of the species. however, the genetic analysis clearly indicates that there is no detectable genetic variation in the terrestrial phase of the two sister species. therefore, it is unlikely that this is a good explanation.
in the aquatic phase, however, the difference in skin coloration between the mountain torrent salamander and the brown rough-skinned newt is less obvious. it would appear that the mountain torrent salamander is more likely to be camouflaged against predators than the brown rough-skinned newt. yet, the mountain torrent salamander also has a larger head and a longer snout than the brown rough-skinned newt. this may indicate that the mountain torrent salamander can better forage and capture prey than its sister species. this might then be an additional explanation for the differences in skin coloration between the two species. the mountain torrent salamander feeds on invertebrates. in contrast, the brown rough-skinned newt feeds on fish. 3d9ccd7d82
