Erich Kunzel was one of the most celebrated and influential pops conductors of all time. He started the country's first winter pops series, the "8 O'Clock Pops", and in 1977, he became the conductor of the newly founded Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, a part of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. He transformed the pops genre with his innovative programming, featuring classical music, Broadway musicals, movie scores, jazz, rock, and more. He collaborated with many famous musicians, such as Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Tormé, Doc Severinsen, Dave Brubeck, Ray Charles, Henry Mancini, James Galway, Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and more. He also commissioned and premiered many new works by composers such as John Williams, Leroy Anderson, Richard Rodgers, Marvin Hamlisch, and others.


Kunzel's recordings with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra were widely acclaimed and popular. He recorded for the Telarc label since 1977, selling over 10 million copies worldwide. His albums covered a wide range of genres and themes, such as American classics, patriotic songs, holiday music, Disney tunes, Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, and more. Some of his best-selling albums include Round-Up (1986), featuring cowboy songs and western movie themes; The Big Picture (1997), featuring film music by John Williams; American Jubilee (2001), featuring patriotic songs and marches; and Masters and Commanders (2005), featuring music from seafaring movies. His recordings won him several awards and honors, such as a Grammy Award for Copland: The Music of America (1997), a Grand Prix du Disque for Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue (1981), and a Sony Tiffany Walkman Award for "visionary recording activities".


Kunzel also brought his music to audiences around the world through tours and television specials. He led the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra on tours to Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, China, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Europe. He also conducted the Boston Pops Orchestra at the invitation of Arthur Fiedler in 1970. He made history by conducting the first ever pops concert in China in 1998 with the China National Symphony Orchestra. In 2005, he returned to China with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra to perform at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. In 2008, he participated in the opening festivities of the Summer Olympics in Beijing. He also appeared on PBS television specials such as Evening at Pops (1979-1989), Happy Holidays with the Boston Pops (1986-1994), and A Capitol Fourth (1991-2009).


Kunzel died on September 1, 2009 at his home in Maine after battling cancer. He was 74 years old. He left behind a legacy of music that touched millions of people around the world.
